[ARCHIVED] Summit Co Announces Library Closures, Recommendations to Public Facilities and In-Person Services

Summit County, Utah (March 13, 2020) —

Health Recommendations to Public Facilities

In response to Governor Gary R. Herbert’s soft closure of public schools beginning March 16, Summit County Health Director, Dr. Rich Bullough, has issued the following recommendation to recreation facilities and movie theaters:

“That all recreational facilities in Summit County close for public services in line with the language of [Governor Gary R. Herbert’s soft closure of public schools]. Staff may still [report] to the facility. But, you should practice the social distancing and cleanliness measures we have been promoting. The closures should remain in place until further notice, which will be determined through ongoing evaluation of the pandemic. These recommendations are subject to change at any time.”

Historical Museum and Library Closures

Following this guidance, the Summit County Historical Museum has been closed. All three branches of the Summit County Library have also been closed, issuing the following statement:

“After careful consideration and to protect the well-being of our patrons and staff against the coronavirus outbreak, we have decided to close all Summit County Library branches starting Friday, March 13, at 4 p.m., until further notice. We will continue to update our website and social media channels as information becomes available. We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work through this unprecedented event. Our librarians will continue to provide support as needed. You may contact us with questions and general guidance. If you need to speak directly to a librarian, please call 435-615-3900.”

During this closure, the Library wishes to recommend patrons of digital resources available during the closure:

Digital Resources: Online services are available at for cardholders, including a large collection of digital materials such as books, audiobooks, magazines, movies, and television shows, as well as research tools for online learning. You can sign up for a card on our website at If you register online, we will assign you temporary credentials so you can use our online resources. You will be emailed within a few days with a permanent card number and PIN.

Returns: Materials may still be returned to outside book drops at all locations. Librarians will work to check items in. Don’t worry if you’re unable to make it to the library or if you receive any overdue notices; we will renew any overdue materials in the interim.

Holds and the Henefer Remote Locker: All current hold items will be held at the branches until we reopen. In addition, the library maintains a system in Henefer that allows patrons to place items on hold for pickup at the locker. Since it does not require in-person contact to function, this system will remain in effect.

Many county services, departments and elected offices will remain open but are modifying the ways they interact with the public. For current information go to
