Public Lands Initiative

An Advisory group was assembled who considered and recommended specific requests to include in the Public Lands Initiative that would best serve Summit County.

The Advisory group accomplished the following:

  • Inventoried the landscape and identified what lands should be protected and why;
  • Evaluated cost/benefit of various land management designations;
  • Kept in mind public concerns such as limits on future grazing allotments, timber removal, and impediments for the U. S. Forest Service’s ability to suppress fires and manage a healthy forest.
  • Determined what should happen to County owned parcels near the area;
  • Made land management recommendation(s) to Council that ensure a healthy forest.
